KURZ: gilding put to the test of sustainable development

2021/06/21

To put an end to misconceptions, the German company specialising in hot stamping and cold transfer has chosen to have the recyclability of its finishes and decorations certified.

The industry is asking a lot of questions about decoration transfer technologies. ‘However, a certain number of misconceptions are floating around, in particular, regarding the impact of these techniques on the final recyclability of the pack’, stressed Alexis Tonneau, Sustainability Project Manager within the Graphics Department at KURZ. To be clear, the company came forward to pass the German standards institute’s DIN test, and, according to DIN EN 13432, Luxor MTS 220, now Certco-certified, is fully compostable without any environmental risk as long as the decorations do not exceed 1% of the mass of the paper or cardboard.

Apt for recycling

The same goes for Lumafin®, a semi-transparent aluminium-free hot stamping process used with underlay printing for an over moulding effect, which is also recyclable. ‘We also had Ingede, the international deinking institute, certify the recyclability of our hot stamping and cold transfer solutions: due to their chemistry and their extreme finesse, our markings can be separated from the paper fibres during the same process as the inks’.

In the same sustainable spirit, KURZ will be showcasing two film optimisation solutions at the ES by Luxe Pack: Foilconnect® software (which calculates and optimises hot stamping consumption) and Distorun®, a film saver module for cold transfer and application of positioned images.
