Rekrill: the innovation by Krill Design that transforms orange peels into packaging
Founded in 2018, the Italian start-up Krill Design offers Rekrill, a compostable biomaterial made from agri-food by-products such as orange peels, coffee grounds, or hazelnut shells.

After a €6 million funding round in early 2025, its production capacity increased from 300 to 4,000 tons per year. Rekrill, comparable to ABS or PP, can be customized in color and texture, and can be injection molded, thermoformed, or 3D printed.

The material reduces CO₂ emissions by 67% compared to fossil-based plastics and remains compostable even in marine environments.

In the luxury sector, Rekrill is used for cosmetic jars, perfume caps, or food containers, in partnership with Berlin Packaging and Lumson.

According to Krill Design CEO Ivan Calimani, “using orange or hazelnut peels in packaging enhances the storytelling aspect of brands.”
