[Start-Up]The next-generation substrates from Susmata, the waste alchemist

[Start-Up]The next-generation substrates from Susmata, the waste alchemist
Turning plant residues and industrial waste into desirable packaging. That is the promise of SUSMATA, a publicly listed German company that presents itself as the sustainable using natural wastes, to create plant delivered alternatives to fossil-based materials.

From discarded waste to signature material

SUSMATA AG plays a unique role in the packaging sector. Neither a processor nor a packaging manufacturer, the company simply replaces traditional materials with a high environmental footprint. Its speciality: repurposing forgotten waste streams – tea waste, coffee grounds, floral or industrial residues – to give them a second life as premium materials.

Among its flagship innovations, WASTEA is already establishing itself as a compelling alternative to animal leather. Derived from tea waste, this vegan material boasts a drastically reduced carbon footprint and minimal water consumption. Rigid boxes, jewellery cases, pouches: it offers sensory qualities that meet luxury standards.

Another area of exploration is the VSP+ (Vegan Sustainable Plan) range, which focuses on the sensory experience for niche luxury. With REROSE, a rose-derived material with delicate olfactory notes, or LAVMATA, a lavender-based material with antibacterial and fire-retardant properties, SUSMATA brings a unique emotional dimension to packaging.

A new frontier in responsible expression

For Erdem Dogan, Managing Director, the challenge goes beyond simply replacing materials:

« Our vision is simple: packaging must evolve from being a disposable carrier into a responsible storyteller. It should protect the product, elevate the brand experience, and at the same time give back to the planet — either through bio-based origin, circularity, or the avoidance of harmful materials like microplastic-shedding synthetics. In short: packaging should no longer cost the environment what it delivers in emotion. »

With NOTPLAST, for example, the company offers an alternative to conventional plastics, eliminates microplastics and remains compatible with the uses of flexible, protective packaging. Other innovations such as BIOSTYRO or CIRCMA are in the pipeline and will be introduced in the future to create a more circular industry.

Sustainability is already industrialised

SUSMATA stands out for its ability to think about innovation on an industrial scale. Whilst each of its materials replaces a polluting solution, it can also be deployed on a large scale and works with processors’ existing equipment.
This avoids the need for heavy investment and encourages rapid adoption by the automotive, fashion, furniture, aviation and packaging sectors.

Faced with the challenges facing the sector (perceptions of lower quality, increasing regulatory constraints, and securing supply volumes), SUSMATA moves forward with quiet conviction: the luxury of tomorrow will be crafted from the right materials. Materials that tell a story—no longer one of extraction, but of transformation.

In this evolving ecosystem, SUSMATA is redefining the very language of luxury packaging.
